 Musings…….

Power of the Common Man

The Farmers bill being repealed by the Modi led Central government comes as no surprise. The crucial states of Punjab and UP goes to polls in February 2022 and its results will mostly decide the mood of the Opposition for 2024.

The three contentious Farmers  bills were wrought with problems right from the beginning. From its hasty implementation through ordinances to its passing in Parliament without debate through a voice vote, the bill was bulldozed by the Government.

Public sentiment was against the bill right from the beginning. However, the central government which pushed through Demonetisation and GST, became complacent.

Both GST and Demonetisation did humongous damage to the economy, and was deemed by every expert on Economy as a policy failure. Still the Government survived it through their propaganda machinery and agenda setting.

This time too the Government would have thought it could hush any dissent given time. However, they seem to have underestimated the poor farmers.

Farmers showed tenacity in protesting through brutal police excesses, harsh North Indian Winter and Covid to continue their protests.

Added to multiple deaths among protests came the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in UP which was a shame and a blot on Indian polity itself.

The Government reacted to all this in its usual confident self - by unleashing unspeakable violence and tear gas dispersions, false narratives, propaganda and even branding poor farmers as Khalistanis !

Modi being a master politician himself over time has decided to bow down to popular sentiment. Even though UP would not be directly effected by the laws, unlike Punjab, even there, the public sentiment was sympathetic to the protesting farmers.

With crucial Assembly elections around the corner, Modi had no other option than bow down and repeal the farmer acts.

After all creating monopoly for private companies in Agriculture would never be good optics going into elections in an agrarian state !

All credit goes to the poor Farmers who’s struggle and sacrifice has been vindicated to say the least.

What better example will you see the “Power of the Common Man” in practice than in this struggle for repealing these Farmers laws. My heart goes out to the farmers who fought valiantly for their cause.

For those Kangana Ranawat’s who still think we achieved Independence through “ begging “ might as well take the struggle of the poor farmers as a lesson in history ! Hundreds and thousands of such struggle against a mightier opponent “ the British” got us this freedom that you enjoy !!

As far as the common man is concerned “the struggle” continues.

Food for Thought…….
