Musings.......

Communist Party of China and CPIM

My dear friends who have been following my articles know that until recently my writings were mainly against the Right wing fascist forces of our country. However, during the lockdown a whole new aspect opened up before me when I came upon few books on Communism.

That the Left wing fascism is equally relevant as the Right wing was in fact new to me. The history buff in me awakened and culminated in my two previous blogs on Left Wing Fascism. This chance encounter with communism opened up a Pandora’s box for the reader in me and my reading pattern.

It is at this juncture that we heard of the unfortunate incident from Galway Valley in Ladakh UT. That 20 Indian soldiers including a colonel rank officer was killed is something really terrible and sad. I join as I’m sure whole of India would, in condemning the incident. My heart goes out to the families of the Jawans who gave up their lives for the security of the nation.

After a very long time, Indo-China border issues  is back in the news.
Many have spoken about lack of transparency regarding the whole incident and how it could have been handled better.

Communist parties in India are known for their murky history with the Communist Party of China (CPC).
During the India-China war of 1962, the radical wing of the then Communist Party of India (CPI) opposed the unqualified support to the Nehru government, because of its class character, in its fight against China.

This shameful event is considered one of the main factors responsible for the split within Communist party. Thus, by 1964, the differences among communists increased beyond reconciliation and as we know the Communist party famously split.  Hence, a Pro Soviet CPI and a pro Chinese CPIM was born !!

It was thus not surprising to me at all that following the standoff in Galwan valley, CPIM came up with a statement where it did not mention or criticise China !

This is not the first time that the Communist Party has done this. Going back to 2017, CPIM in an editorial in its journal People’s Democracy advocated for “peace and tranquility” during the Doklam crisis and suggested Bhutan should take the lead in negotiations with China and India should only lend support to Bhutan’s position.
The party which is otherwise vocal on Indian foreign policy could not even criticise the neighbouring country responsible for the Doklam issue in its statement.

The poster attached along with this article is an old Communist poster written in Bangla which says “ The Chinese chairman is our Chairman”.  Even though this poster is from the ‘70s, it is unacceptable and shameful any day.

This seems to be the right time to remember Gulzarilal Nanda who in 1965, as a Union Minister went on air to denounce the CPIM as a Chinese “inspiration” and “part of Beijing’s designs against India in furtherance of her grand strategy of establishing hegemony in Asia”.

Gulzarilal Nanda turned out to be a visionary leader it seems now.
The CPM, at least publicly seems to have broken ranks with the Chinese since then. This can be attributed to two reasons.
- On account of the considerable influence of the Congress party in India.
- Acknowledging that class consciousness among the Indian peasantry and proletariat has not become so acute as to trigger “immediate” revolution.
Thus the CPIM seemed to have taken a non- alignment from both the “right revisionism” of the Soviet Union and the “Left Opportunism” of the Chinese Communist Party, for its own survival and political future in India.

The irony is that as the Chinese economy liberalised the CPC moved further away from the CPIMs own ideas.
However, the CPIM has became more supportive of China and less critical of it.

We all now know that China is unilaterally seeking to rewrite multilateral rules and norms for Asia and establish its hegemony the world over.
It is a pity that the Communist parties are still misreading the real objectives of China. China has moved far away from CPIMs own ideas !

I rest my case as I did in my previous two articles on Left wing fascism. Do we need a separate and archaic Communist party in our country when the interest of the Left wing is very well met by the socialist ideals of Congress Party.

A small example would make things clear of how anti- development this Communist party is in my home state of Kerala. The list of protests and militant unionist activity that the Communists organised is in itself shameful.

They protested against  Computer, Calculator, Tractor, JCB, Flour Mill, Stone Crusher Machine, Reaping Machine, Express Highway, Airport, Smart City, Metro, GAIL Pipeline, Asian Development Bank(ADB), Vizhinjam Port, Private Medical Colleges, 10 plus 2 education system, Panchayati Raj System the list is endless and not exhaustive !!!

To add insult to injury the present day Communists in Kerala claim the famed “Kerala Model” as of their making.

We know that it is the Religious Harmony, strides in Healthcare and Education Political Awareness of Keralites along with State policy supported by a favourable historical background, that has led to Kerala to become a Model state and a beacon of hope for poor countries worldwide.
It would not be wrong to say that Kerala has developed despite alternative Communist governments.

Is this not the best opportunity to bid goodbye to Communism and left wing fascism once and for all and show them their right place - in the annals of history.

Food for Thought.......
