Musings.......

It was with anger that I read the following news in my mobile newsfeed. That the right wing saffron outfit Hindu Mahasabha celebrated the 111th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhijis assassin Nathuram Godse in Madhya Pradesh. To add injury to insult, it’s national Vice President hailed him as a patriot!!

At a time when all public functions and gatherings are banned due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, what was the urgency and need for such a commemoration escapes me.

On November 15th 2019, the same outfit had observed Balidan Divas at its Gwalior office to mark the 70th anniversary of the hanging of Godse. Similarly during the time of the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh in 2017, the Hindu Mahasabha had tried to establish a temple in Godses name.

Born Ramachandra Vinayak Godse, Nathuram was an active worker for the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha with alleged direct ties with Savarkar which is now well established with proof.
Since the BJP government has come to power at the centre, the Hindu Mahasabha has tried to rehabilitate Godse and portray him as a patriot. It requested the Prime Minister to install a bust of Godse within Parliament House. It created a documentary film on him called Deshbhakt Nathuram Godse for release on the death anniversary of Gandhiji on 30th January 2015. As I already mentioned there were attempts to built a temple for him and commemorate Gandhijis death as Shaurya Divas ( Bravery Day). There is even talks for renaming the historical city of Meerut in his name !!

The way the right wing is trying to idolify Gandhis assassin is atrocious. By killing Gandhi they say Godse and RSS has done a favour to the Hindu community, when the truth is far far from it.

Gandhiji has done more for the Hindu community and India as a whole which 10 generations of these Right wing fundamentals won’t be able to match. I can substantiate my claims with an example from history.

In August of 1932 the then British Prime Minister announced the Communal Award that gave the Depressed Classes separate electorates for central and provincial legislatures. The depressed classes was a loose term which collectively referred to the Dalits/ Untouchables/ Scheduled Caste.
Gandhiji saw this as a threat and danger to the Hindu Community that would de-link Dalits from the Hindus.
On 20th September 1932, while in Yerwada Jail, Gandhiji declared a fast unto death. Finally, the British had to relent provided the Indian side reached an agreement among themselves.

The Poona pact was signed on 24th September 1932, that discarded seperate electorates. It put forward the now present joint electorates with reserved seats for the SC/ST community. The pact also called for fair representation of depressed classes in public services, and earmarking a portion of the states educational grant for depressed classes.
The Poona pact in a way was a landmark in the political and constitutional history of India and Gandhijis foresight helped keep the Hindu community together.

This one example is enough to clearly establish that Mahatma Gandhi has done enough for the Hindu Community than what Hindu Mahasabha and the RSS would do in their lifetimes.
While all this was happening Savarkar was shamelessly writing Mercy Petitions to the British and the RSS was licking the boots of the British.

Gandhiji taught us the art of non-violence and ahimsa. Without him and his beliefs the idea of India would be incomplete and left soulless.

By celebrating the killer of Gandhi and idolising him, the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha is attacking the very idea of India that millions fought and won with so much sacrifice and valour during the freedom struggle.

Food for Thought
