Musings.......
At last I get the motivation to take pen to paper or I think I should say take finger to tablet and start writing. So after a long hiatus of a couple of months I’m back with my Musings.
The past few days have been new, exciting, and to say the least an experience. The words wedding, new life, partner and tripping would sum up my activities of the past month or two.
While I was away from the humdrum of social media which is the new roadside tea shop for gossipmongers a lot has happened in the world and I feel it an obligation out of habit to catch up. In fact this is the first time I am feeling somber over missing out.
The biggest news of it all is what all of us know and anticipating, the General Elections 2019. The once in 5 years event would be one of the biggest electoral practices to date and if I am not wrong the costliest elections ever to have taken place.
The Modi- Shah duo seek another mandate from the people. However, this time round the sailing will not be smooth. From getting elected on the development and anti- corruption plank to delivering a below average Governance, there is very little to be proud about. From making a mockery of Democratic and Constitutional institutions to deliberately creating communal disharmony and chizm in society to garner votes, this Modi government has failed on all fronts.
Taking the Agricultural point of view, the Modi Government high on promises delivered none hitherto leading to mass farmer suicides and agitations from all over the Country. Gross mismanagement of MSP and failure to prevent price rise let to never before seen levels of agitation in the Capital and states for which our PM or his Government had no answer.
Our Industry also does not fare well. Very little investor confidence and market driven price rise were the hallmark of the past few years and the Government has stood like mere spectators.
Instead, they have tried to get the reserve money out of RBI stating a particular Clause 7, which is never before used. The drama surrounding the RBI ended with the resignation of its Governor, who as a matter of fact was appointed by this Government replacing Reghuram Rajan as Governor who resigned in the wake of objecting to the Demonatisation fiasco. This goes to show even hand picked men find it difficult to work under this dispensation.
The reserve money of RBI which has never been taken by successive Governments showed this administrations desperation to fund their projects.
When I say projects, folks do not get mistaken into thinking that some projects are actually working. On the contrary, most of the projects I mentioned are just the continuation of the previous UPA Government schemes with just their names changed.
While writing this article General Elections are declared and Model Code of Conduct is in place. The controversy surrounding the declaration of dates of election notwithstanding, we will have a new Government in place by May. It is now upto us “the common man” to decide whether we should continue with a chest thumping showman or should we vote for change.
When I talk of change, I should also talk of the alternatives that we have. The opposition in India is in tatters with no unity among the rank and file. The Indian National Congress which leads the opposition file, has yet to reach coalition partnerships in most of the states. We hope such issues are passing and it will be sorted out.
Fresh out of three brilliant wins in State elections to the Hindi Heartland, the Congress party has wind in its sails. Momentum is going its way and cadre enthusiasm is visible in the ground. A rejuvenated Congress President Rahul Gandhi is showing political maturity. With his brilliant interaction with college students in Stella Maria’s College in Chennai, he has captured the imagination of the youth and country.
Entry of Smt. Priyanka Gandhi or should I say Indira incarnate will do good for the party with her poise and humility.
Now what is left for the party to do is carry forward with the momentum and reach the finish line. If that is the case then there is every chance the Indian National Congress will turn out to be the single largest party in the Lok Sabha and be able to form a Coalition Government.
While writing this article news flashes alleging crores of money given to present Central cabinet ministers by a former Karnataka Chief Minister in return of supporting him to form Government in Karnataka. What is more worrying is in his diary, which is now out in the open, there is alleged bribing of Judges too which if true is end of respect for the Judiciary which is one of the pillars of Democracy.
Talking about corruption, I cannot change topic without mentioning Rafale Deal which is turning out to be the Waterloo of Narendra Modi. With even the Hindu Newspaper giving enough evidence of outright corruption, this Government has nowhere to hide, at least from the eyes of the common man.
Elections will be crucial in the state of Kerala too, from where I Hail from. This would be a make or break sort of election for the BJP. The last chance of communal Right to enter a political space dominated till date by the Left and Centre left. How much it will succeed we will have to wait and see but reports from here are not so pleasing for the BJP.
The Congress party despite group politics have been able to create a goodwill among the general public. Secularism and peaceful democracy seems to get more support over communalism and politics of violence. The Congress is set to put up a good show in the coming elections. It’s coalition partners too may fare well despite internal bickerings. The general idea here is that it is only the Congress which can fight Communal forces and that voting the Left will only help strengthen the BJP.
Moving aside form politics let me go to the happenings around the world if I may.
Biggest news came in from Venenzuela where the President Nicholas Maduro was ousted in a Coup by Opposition leader Juan Guaidó who was immediately recognised as interim President by the USA. Russia and China were quick to retaliate giving support to Maduro. Present stalemate continues with both sides claiming them to the the legitimate Governement. It is sad to see Venenzuela which was already down with huge economic stagnation and inflation, now going into political instability. Inflation here is huge leading to mass migration of Venenzuelans to neighbouring countries like Columbia, Chilie, Brazil and even Mexico. It seems a huge humanitarian crisis is on the cards and unless the UN steps in and creates peace things will go out of hand. The UN being a toothless body is another issue and beyond the scope of this article.
News of another drastic incident comes from Christchurch, New Zealand where a Right fanatic gunman opened fire in two Mosques within kilometers of each other within a span of hours killing 50 odd innocent men and women and injuring hundreds. This is one of the biggest mass murder of Minorities in a developed country. The gunman was supposedly influenced by the White Supremists and Donald Trump was one of his heroes. This goes to show how much hatred this world carries. By declaring this act as an act of terror, by not naming the gunman and give him cult status among religious fanatics, and by banning military grade ammunition’s from her Country New Zealand PM Jacintha Arden has won hearts all over the world. Women all over New Zealand wore headscarf in respect to the deceased. Point to note is that Muslims in New Zealand comprise 1% of the population.
The gunman was influenced the most by a Radovan Karadzic. Trained as a psychiatrist, he co-founded the Serb Democratic Party in Bosnia and Herzegovina and served as the first President of Republika Srpska from 1992 to 1996. He was a fugitive from 1996 until July 2008 after having been indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
He was found guilty of genocide for the Srebrenica massacre, which aimed to kill "every able-bodied male" in the town and systematically exterminate the Bosnian Muslim community. He was also convicted of persecution, extermination, deportation, forcible transfer (ethnic cleansing), and murder in connection with his campaign to drive Bosnian Muslims and Croats out of villages claimed by Serb forces.
Britain seems to be acting like the grandmothers old dog who wants to exit home but stays looking out at the doorstep. Brexit vote was twice rejected by the British MPs and PM Theresa May is in a spot of trouble. It’s high time Britain come up with a solid plan and exit or do another referendum, if they don’t want to look like laughing stalks.
Cyclone Idai and Massive floods have hit East African countries of Zimbabwe and Mozambique with thousands feared dead and millions displaced. What makes me sad even is how less newsvalue this news has in a developing country like India. Africans are our brethren and India is trying to make trade deals with the continent which is a Goldmine for investors. It’s time we give Africa its place that it deserves.
US President in a statement says its time to declare Golan Heights as Israeli territory and removed “Israel occupied” Golan Height part from its ministerial paperwork.
Golan Heights is the area captured from Syria and occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War, territory which Israel effectively annexed in 1981. This region includes the western two-thirds of the geological Golan Heights, as well as the Israeli-occupied part of Mount Hermon.
Syria has retaliated and said In a statement that Golan Heights is Syrian Arab territory. Things will turn interesting as Golan Heights is supposedly rich in Oil and Hydrocarbons.
Talking of “Interesting” lets hope both Indian General Elections and the International scene will keep things enthralling and give more fodder to feed my Musings.......
Food for Thought.......
