Today, November 8th is International Day of Radiology (IDoR). Today marks the 122nd anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895. That day effectively was the foundation laying of the new discipline in medicine, Radiology. IDoR was first introduced in 2012 as a joint initiative by European Society of Radiology(ECR), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American College of Radiology (ACR).
The International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists also celebrates this day as World Radiography Day since 2007, along with other radiographers association.
A special day for me in all aspects. First IDoR since becoming a full fledged practicing Radiologist is bound to bring up emotions. The feeling of being part of history, humbled me and is a reminder that I have a long way to go in my chosen career path.
Keeping celebrations and emotions to one side I get reminded that its Nov. 8th which is being commemorated as the first anniversary of the so called fight against black money by some, and as black day in history of Indian economy by others. I get reminded the wise words said by our former PM, that Demonatisation was a huge mistake, if I'm not mistaken his exact words were - Monumental disaster and an Organised Loot.
When such words comes from one of the Best economists this country has produced, then you sit up and listen. Manmohan Singhji in his famous speech then in Rajya Sabha predicted a 2% point drop in GDP and u know what he was to the point. Well forgive me if I'm being blunt, this is what happens to the country when you elect a Chai wala to the post of Prime Minister.
I am not undermining Narendra Modiji who is a brilliant politician and a great public speaker, nor am I demeaning Chai Walas or Chai. After all what did they do wrong.
Even Modi- Shah duo could not sell Demonatisation this time round. When you trouble the public and cover up your mistake with more fake news and false promises then its bound to ricochet back.
One Central Minister today declared that note ban has led to dip in prostitution and he didn't stop there. He went on to say it even reduced supari killings in Mumbai. I have no words to counter this argument. Flabbergasted would be an apt word even though it wouldn't do justice to what I'm feeling right now.
GST seems to follow the same path as Demonatisation. Hasty implementation has broken the back of the common public. Instead of a single tax system for the country, what we got was a structured Centre-State-Mixed tax system leading to exorbitant price rice for almost all commodities. Last I heard our PM has blamed the Congress party for GST in an election rally in Gujarat. I am doubting whether this government has any clue on what is happening regarding the tax regime of this country and its consequences. Our country wil be in soup if we are being run by precariously ill informed people who's agenda gets set by their masters in Nagpur (read RSS).
All the talk about Bullet trains and Cashless economy will just remain talks. By declaring economically non-feasible projects before elections, the government is fooling the general public into voting for them. For how long they can go like this is anyone's guess. By rigging VVPAT machines I guess. Thousands of VVPAT machines to be used in Gujarat election was found rigged just recently.
Coming to Kerala, we are witnessing unprecedented crowd and enthusiasm in 'Padayorukkam' Kerala Yatra by
Opposition Leader. Such crowds were not seen with the Yatras conducted by neither LDF nor the NDA. If participation and enthusiasm is a gauge of public sentiment, then we need not go anywhere to read the writing on the wall. Its time to be proud of the people of Kerala who have wholesomely rejected the divisive politics of the BJP and the anti-development, criminal politics of the Comminists and held high our secular credentials.
In the international scene, silently India has sent its first shipping contingent to Chabahar port in Iran for trade deal with Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. Let this be new beginnings for trade with Iran and through it to Central Asia and Europe.
In Kenya Ulhuru Kenyatta somehow manages to cling on to power, when the Opposition leader withdrew from elections, held for the second time when the first results were held null by the Election Commission. Let's hope democracy flourishes in Kenya and the country gets the economic prosperity it deserves.
Daw Aung Sang Sui Kyi of Myanmar finally visits Rakhine state and sees the plight of the Rohingyan Minority. Let's hope this will help the thousands of Rohingyas who are left stateless to get back their rights.
I don't feel like mentioning the bonhomie between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Il (pun intended). With Trump threatening North Korea today on his state visit to South Korea, kindly keep your fingers crossed folks.
We will meet again in this forum if Nuclear Winter hasn't engulfed us all already.
Food for thought.........
