The Economic Survey of India 2017 estimates that the magnitude of interstate migration in India was close to 9 million annually between 2011 and 2016, while Census 2011 puts the total number of internal migrants in the country at a staggering 139 million. UP and Bihar are the biggest source states, followed closely by MP, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. The major destination states are Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra and Kerala. These vulnerable population of India work in the construction, manufacturing, transport, services, hotel and domestic work market - marked by low pay and hazardous work conditions. The common issues they face at work is non- payment of wages, physical abuse, accidents and even death. Musings....... Coming out of a dull weekend of sorts I feel compelled to write. After all what had started as a mere passion and me blurting out my inherent frustrations, has slowly incremented itself into my psychic, to the extent of me starting a blogging site for myself. A Sunday visit to Crosswords Bookstore was the highlight of my weekend. The amount of satisfaction that it gives, makes me worry - am I even fit for the raspy, cacophonous, ruthless and merciless world that we live in. I guess every introvert gets to face such doubts, some time or the other in their lives albeit I don't consider myself to be one. Speaking of ruthless, my mind deviates towards news of Jamal Khashoggi's apparent assasination with fingers pointing towards MBS. Musings……. My Gandhi Gandhiji has always been an invisible presence in my house. Or so I think ! My childhood was spent in New Delhi where I did my schooling. In our Government quarters there we used to have a huge portrait of Gandhiji. This is one of my earliest memory of Gandhi. Coming from a Congress family ( such families are dwindling nowadays ) I was introduced very early to Gandhiji and his works. In junior school there used to be plays where students dressed up as Gandhi and other freedom fighters and had to come up on stage to read a famous quote from these freedom fighters. I never got a chance to dress up as Gandhiji, though once I was Nehru ! Civics and History was my favourite subjects in school and the Freedom struggle was one of my favourite topics.
