Musings....... No one waiting for 2020 would have realised the world would be facing something so drastic as the COVID-19, previously called the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (nCOV-2019). Starting as an outbreak in Wuhan, the capital city of Central China’s Hubei Province, the viral zoonotic disease has spread its eagle wings into an epidemic at first and then into a pandemic engulfing the whole of earth around it. An outbreak is a sudden rise in the number of cases of a disease. It may occur in a community or geographical area or may affect several countries. It may last for a few days, weeks or for several years. Some outbreaks like influenza are expected each year. Sometimes a single case of an infectious disease can be considered an outbreak such as if the disease is rare - like botulism or if it has serious public health implications- like Anthrax. An epidemic occurs when an infectious disease spreads rapidly to many people. An example would be the 2003 SARS - severe acute respir...
Musings....... I would like to write about an incident, one about which I read sometime ago. It was the early 1990s when few corporate companies in the United States of America (USA) came up with a scheme for the pig and poultry farmers. The Corporate company would provide Piglets to the farmers at low cost. The farmers just had to grow them in their farm and the company itself will buy back the fully grown pigs at the market price. The farmer didn't have to run around small markets for their pigs and the Corporate company didn't have to spent the time, money and space of growing the animal. The first year went all fine, farmers were paid the market price and everyone was very happy. The second year too went without incident. However,by the third year citing some difficulties the Corporare company halved the price of the pigs. The farmers thought this to be an aberration and bore t...
3rd April 2022 Musings……. SriLanka Burning What can gross mismanagement of the economy give you ? Well the answer is Sri Lanka. Once upon a time, this island nation was considered a budding tourist destination with a vibrant democracy. All this seems to have changed for the worse within a few years. Sri Lanka’s history as we all know has been a chequered one. There was long years of civil war between the Singhalese speaking Government and the Tamil speaking LTTE in broadly speaking terms. The centre and southern part of Sri Lanka is predominantly Singhalese speaking natives who form the majority and hold power in every government. The Tamil speaking minority is restricted to the North of Sri Lanka including in the district of Jaffna, and form the minority. This internal strife lasted for years and there seemed no respite. We Indians can never forget this as we lost one of our most dynamic Prime Ministers Shri. Rajiv Ga...
