Musings.......

History is made by the winner some say and is holding out to be true.  I'm referring to the recent elevation of Ram Nath Kovindji who until a few days back was a nobody among the movers and shakers of Delhi politics, to the presidency.
What stood out from the boring, largely bland oath taking ceremony was Kovindjis ( or rather His Excellencies) speech.
While mentioning our Mahatma he in the same breath talks about Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayaya which seemed to me as irreverence to Bapuji.
The irony is stark when we realise the role the RSS played in the assassination of Bapu and how Deen Dayal Upadhayaya was associated with the organisation.

While talking about other greats from our freedom movement he does omit another Pandit from the list which seemed all too deliberate.
To be fair Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a stalwart of his times and to forget his contributions towards Bharat Nirman is like forgetting to mention about Arjuna in the Mahabharata. Such a stark omission.
Panditji though had a well to do upbringing and a foreign education, the sacrifices that he did for shaping the India in its present form is humongous.  Spending major part of your life in jail is no small feat. His contributions in the freedom movement and later as our first Prime minister is not to be forgotten.  After all Panchasheel and Non- Alignments were foreign policy gold mines which elevated the status of India among the world community, and made India the Torchbearer and spokesperson of the so called Third World.

Our Present President comes from humble beginnings, belongs to the most downtrodden communities of India.
It is only our country and the beauty of our democracy that such a person could hold this post.
What our new President should aspire to be is not a rubber stamp President who gives speeches prepared at the behest of the PMO, or should not aspire to be the first RSS President of India.
Our new President has a big opportunity at hand. He should not be bowed down by bipartisan politics and should rise above it.  He should be able to uphold the dignity of the office that he holds and take a leaf out of past presidents who have upheld the constitution with such finesse and create a history that future generations could follow.
Food for thought.........
