Musings.......

The moves of our Central Government should be sans doubt. When our Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at Red Fort, on 75th Anniversary Azad Hind Government of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, it was seen with suspicion by many a political analyst and opposition parties. Not to doubt, Netaji is an unforgettable freedom fighter and legend. He has been honoured and given his place in history by successive governments and has his own clout in Indian History.

Netaji's defiant patriotism made him a hero in our country, however his means were ambivalent, for eg: his attempts during World War II to rid India of British Rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, left a doubtful legacy. Netaji was President of Indian National Congress during the 1938-1939 period and was succeeded by none other than Rajendra Prasad. Later due to ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi he was ousted from INC in 1940. In 1941, he arrived in Germany with hopes of a German invasion of India. As unfeasible as it may seem now, Germany's power was at its epitome and such a move would have changed the course of our history. It was not to be as Germany faced blatant attack from the Allied forces and its priorities changed.
Netaji shifted base from Germany to Japan, travelling in a German submarine arranged by The Furher himself !!!

Netaji reached Japanese held Sumatra and revamped his Indian National Army ( INA ) composed of Indian Soldiers from British Army. Later the Provisional Government of Free India ( Azad Hind Fauj ) was formed by Netaji in Japanese occupied Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Subsequently, history teaches us that Netaji fought valiantly against the British Army along with Japanese forces. However, lack of military skill and Japanese reverses at war drove them to defeat.
Netaji saw opportunity in Soviet Union which he felt was turning anti- British and started his journey which was short lived by a plane crash in present day Taiwan. Many Indians still believe Netaji to be alive and await his heroic return to Independence.
The Indian National Congress, the party that led to our Independence, praises Netajis patriotism but at the same time distanced it from his ideology and tactics. Netajis collaboration with fascists was the main point of contention.

Netaji was a leader with great drive and charisma. He coined the famous slogan 'Jai Hind' which inspired millions of Indians and still does. He cleared the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination in 1919, however did not want to work under an alien Government and resigned from ICS in 1921, and plunged into the Indian National Movement by returning to India from London. He wrote to his brother " Only on the soil of sacrifice and suffering can we raise our National edifice" , which showed his selfless sacrifice for his motherland.

Netaji was President of All India Youth Congress, and later worked closely with Pandit Nehru in organising Congress meeting in Calcutta.
Netajis travels to Europe and his close association and meeting with Benito Mussolini made him open up to communism and fascism which may have influenced his later actions.

Netaji was open to use of force in obtaining Swaraj, where he came in direct confrontation with Gandhiji ideologically. This rift also divided Netaji and Panditji Nehru. It is history that Netaji defeated Gandhijis candidate Pattabhi Siddharamayya and became Congress President for a second term.
He later resigned and formed the All India Forward Block in 1939.

I tried to give a brief history of Netaji with the intention of throwing open the truth of what he stood for ideologically. When our Prime Minister out of the blue comes with such a commemoration, his intentions are clear.  How can our PM think of undermining the legacy of Gandhiji and Pandit Nehru by holding such a show, and to be dressed in Netajs Azad Hind Fauj attire was something directly out of a Fancy dress competition.  Such cheap tactics do not do justice to our Freedom Fighters and should be outright challenged. Creating an Alternative History is for no ones good and this Sangh Parivar- RSS game plan wherin Deen Dayal Upadhyay and RSS leaders who played no part in Indian Independence gets more prominence over our real freedom fighters like Gandhi, Nehru, Bose, it is condemnable.

If our PM thinks he can undermine the legacy of our Freedom fighters and by creating doubt in the minds of public by staking claim to legacies of Bose, Patel and Ambedkar, history will not pardon them. The above mentioned were leaders of stature of the Indian National Congress.  The moves to create Alternate History has to be seen through by us common public.

When Allahabad becomes Prayagraj and Shimla becoming Shyamala under the watch of this Rightist Government, it is left to us to decide if we want our future generation to learn Alternate History.

Food for Thought.......
