Musings.......

I would be lying to you all if I say that I had been busy since the last time I wore my writing cap, the real reason being lack of inspiration.  Writers block is something I have heard of but never thought I would experience it sometime.  I am not foolish enough to think of me as a big writer and all, however a writers block in my own way, probably contributed by my own fallacies.

The next question in front of me is what to write on? Do I write on Politics where there is no dereliction of matter, or do I write on some other issue ?  I come to the conclusion that I should just blurt out whatever that comes to my mind. Just going with the wind would be an ideal euphemism in this context.

As I write this Article the FIFA Football World Cup is underway in Russia. This is the 21st edition of the Football extravaganza. However the excitement has been subdued by the huge corruption scandal within FIFA and a shameful doping scandal on the host country Russia.  I am someone who grew up watching the David Beckhams and the Wayne Roonies of Football. My love for football is influenced by the amount of English Premier League matches that I used to watch and so I love the European style of Football rather than the famed Latin American football.  I have read about Brazilian, Argentinian or Uruguayan style of Football is synonymous with music. I do intend to experience this edition with a schoolboys enthusiasm. I hope the beauty of the game will mask all the outside politics and football bring joy to the millions around the globe.
Talking of football it is hard not to mention the games played by our government on our Judiciary. The judiciary is facing threats to its independence from within and outside. What is at stake is the fate of Indian Democracy. The office of the Chief Justice of India itself has come under a cloud. When the collegium decision on elevating Justice KM Joseph to the Supreme Court as a judge was denied and sent back for reconsideration by the Government, the first nail in the coffin of Judicial autonomy was hit.  The collegium has since hen resent his name back to the Government and it is taking its own jolly good time to respond. Whatever the reasons behind the governments aversion towards Justice KM Joseph who has been a legal luminary in the true sense, it is not good for the country's democratic ethos.

In between all this some opposition parties led by Indian National Congress has pushed an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of a india Deepak Mishra, which was duly sent back by the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. The procedure for removal of a judge was laid down in Article 124(4) of the Constitution. This along with the Judges (Inquiry) act 1968 states that the Chairman of Rajya Sabha is vested with complete discretion in the matter. However the reasons put forward by him is in distaste in the present scenario.

In the international scene, the Syrian Government allegedly used chemical weapons in town of Douma, and without waiting for official confirmation, the US along with its NATO allies carried out air strikes against Syria. The isolation of Iran and Russian backing of Syria has made a troubled scenario into nightmarish levels. What will be next step of Iran is anybodies guess. The United States, withdrew from its Obama era deal with Iran. It's European allies however and staying with the deal for the moment however, without US backing and sanctions on Iran the deal may flop and we may see Iran as a nuclear state in the near future.  Hope realpolitic will supercede and peace descend upon Iran. Iran I need not mention is strategically important for India, be it oil, or Chahbahar port which India is developing as its gateway to Central Asia circumventing Pakistan and along with it China.
In another heartbreaking incident, Israeli forces shot at unarmed Palestinian protesters on the Gaza-Israel border, killing many.
The world witnessed the historic handshake between US president Donald Trump and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un this week. Whatever said and done, Donald Trump proved himself to be a man of his words and fulfilled another promise which not so long ago seemed so unlikely. However, if this will lead to prosperity and mainstreaming of North Korea is still unclear. The world hopes North Korea do not have the fate of Libiyan dictator Mohammar Gadaffi who after a truce with USA was overthrown by US backed rebels. One thing is for certain, Kim Jong Un is no dummy and a regime safety will be paramount in further developments. It would be amusing if either one of them Kim or Trump wins a Nobel. A denuclearised North Korea will anyday be fillip for World Peace.
In other parts of the world, Miguel Diaz Canel took over the reigns of a Cuban Presidency from Raul Castro. He is the first president to be born after the Cuban revolution.
In other news, The Red Fort in New Delhi recently became the site of a different kind of battle when it was adopted as part of a government scheme " Adopt a Heritage" , to privatise the maintainence of historical monuments in the country. Needless to say, this scheme will dilute the Indian interests and business interests will take over leading to commercialism superseding historical preservation. We hope the government finds common sense.
Mahathir Mohammad made a historic comeback at the age of 93 as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. The previous Najeeb Razak government was plagued with graft allegations and scandals. The significant Chinese and Tamil population in Malaysia did play a great part in the formation of the new government showing their growing clout in the generally Malayan dominated government.
Maldives has declared its presidential election later this year. Conducting free and fair elections will be a challenge for the Chinese backed  President Abdulla Yameen. The ousted and exiled Former president Mohammed Nasheed has the local support according to reports. With Maldives getting voted out of UN Security Councils non- permanent membership recently, it is anybody's guess where the Worlds sympathy lies with.
Few of my friends and well wishers have advised me to write on one topic rather than jot down on various topics.  I feel I should heed their advice for a couple of articles and see how it feels like. The idea of Musings is to jot down on whatever that comes to my mind. I promise a change in pattern and see if I can express my views better.

Politically The BJP led NDA seems to be losing ground, however there is a question mark over Opposition unity and who will lead multiple Prime Ministerial aspirants. In its unabashed quest for power in Karnataka, the BJP disgraced itself and ended up uniting the secular opposition for the time being. All by- election results looks promising for the Mahagadhbandhan, considering success in coalition formation. For the Indian National Congress, it has its task cut out. Strengthen party machinery in its traditional strongholds, gain ground wherever it lost out and create coalitions in weaker states. Coming to Kerala, the recent Chengannur by election results , in which even myself voted, is disappointing and cause for concern for INC. caste, communal equations and poor candidate selection did them this time and the CPM candidate capitalised. However, all is not lost as INC gained 2000 odd more votes than previously and held its vote share. A rejuvenated opposition supported by a well led party may still help the INC to get back to its former glory.
Food for Thought.......
